ENGLISH BELOW – De Pensioenfederatie heeft gereageerd op de consultatie van de Europese Commissie over de Europese Pijler voor Sociale Rechten. We pleiten voor een prominentere rol van pensioenen in het nieuwe actieplan.
Aandacht voor pensioenen is belangrijk in een vergrijzend Europa, waar de houdbaarheid van pensioenen en zorgstelsels steeds meer onder druk komen te staan. Veel EU-landen hebben geen (uitgebreid) tweede pijler pensioenstelsel.
De Pensioenfederatie benadrukt dat pensioenen meer zijn dan financiële producten: ze zijn een sociaal grondrecht en een voorwaarde voor een concurrerend en sociaal Europa. Europa kan helpen om de opbouw van tweede pijler pensioen te bevorderen. Dat zorgt voor zowel inkomenszekerheid voor ouderen, als voor meer investeringen in de Europese economie.
De Europese Pijler voor Sociale Rechten is in 2017 gelanceerd om een eerlijker, inclusiever en socialer Europa te bevorderen door sociale rechten van burgers beter te waarborgen. De Pijler bestaat uit 20 principes en rechten, verdeeld over de thema’s ‘gelijke kansen en toegang tot de arbeidsmarkt’; ‘eerlijke arbeidsvoorwaarden’ en ‘sociale bescherming en inclusie’. De aanleiding voor deze consultatie is een tweede actieplan ter uitvoering van de Pijler door de Europese Commissie, wat begin 2026 wordt gepresenteerd.
Strengthen Pensions in the European Pillar of Social Rights
The Dutch Federation of Pension Funds has responded to the European Commission’s consultation on the European Pillar of Social Rights. We call for a more prominent role for pensions in the new action plan.
Attention for pensions is crucial in an ageing Europe, where the sustainability of pension and healthcare systems is increasingly under pressure. Many EU countries do not have a (comprehensive) occupational pension system.
The Dutch Federation of Pension Funds stresses that pensions are more than financial products: they are a social fundamental right and a prerequisite for a competitive and social Europe. Europe can contribute to promoting the development of occupational pensions. This provides both income security for older people and greater investment in the European economy.
The European Pillar of Social Rights was launched in 2017 to promote a fairer, more inclusive and more social Europe by better safeguarding citizens’ social rights. The Pillar consists of 20 principles and rights, grouped under the themes of ‘equal opportunities and access to the labour market,’ ‘fair working conditions,’ and ‘social protection and inclusion.’ The Pillar is not legally binding but serves as a policy and legislative guide. The consultation paves the way for a second action plan to implement the Pillar, which the European Commission will present in early 2026.
